Tesla Motors, as promised, released information about upgrades coming to their Tesla Roadster line of electric sports cars. The Tesla Roadster 3.0 update will be available in the Spring of 2015.
The production technology of lithium-ion batteries has leaped forward in recent years. In the original electric Roadster, released in 2008, was the most advanced battery technology of that time with the battery pack’s capacity being 53 kWh. The Tesla Roadster 3.0 upgrade takes advantage of the newer technology which allowed them to increase capacity by 31% – up to 70 kWh with the same size battery module.
The original model Tesla Roadster had a drag coefficient of 0.36. Improving the aerodynamics allowed them to reduce this figure in the Roadster 3.0 by about 15% – up to 0.31.
Finally, thanks to new tires the rolling resistance coefficient was able to reduce by 20% – from 11.0 kg/ton to 8.9 kg/tonne.
All of these changes are said to have made it possible to increase the cruising range on one battery charge 40-50%. If the original model Tesla Roadster is able to travel about 400 km without recharging, the Roadster 3.0 will be able to cover a distance of 650 km.
Tesla Roadster 3.0 update will be available in spring 2015.
