The problem of preserving the details in the darkest and lightest parts of the picture, partly solved by combining several images taken with different exposure (HDR), can be resolved at the level of the image sensor. Anyway, it gives hope patent obtained by Sony on the proper development.
The essence of the design is that some pixels of the sensor are exposed during the exposure time, and others – for only part of the time. By combining the thus obtained image, you can expand the dynamic range of the image.
In contrast to the traditional approach to HDR, requires several consecutive shots, the sensor proposed by Sony, all done in one shot. Thus differentiated exposure is turned off, which avoids artifacts in those cases when the image in the frame is changing very quickly. Up to a certain limit copes with this task correcting unit.
How soon will find application in the development of serial sensors and cameras – is unknown.
