Overview video ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black: Black Falcon

More than a year ago – namely, in February 2013, NVIDIA released a new flagship uniprocessor architecture Kepler – GeForce GTX TITAN. Performance of this card really impressed even skeptics, yet at the time it was known that 15 of the SMX-GK110 core blocks in TITAN activated only 14, leaving hope for the emergence of more productive solutions.

Published within three months of the GeForce GTX 780 did not materialize, because, despite the higher frequency of the GPU, had another one block SMX-less. In fairness, we note that the price of this card has not been as daunting as on TITAN.

It would seem, appeared with the first snow of 2013 GeForce GTX 780 Ti on the new kernel version B1 was to fully satisfy all fans of products NVIDIA, as they finally got a full-fledged GPU with 2880 stream processors and 15 SMX-blocks , and even at higher frequencies of the GPU and memory.

However, due to the transition to the new core stepping B1, NVIDIA decided to modernize and accelerate its flagship, releasing the “black” version of TITAN – GeForce GTX TITAN Black. It is this model of video card on the example of ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black and will be discussed in today’s article.

From the differences from the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, except, of course, support for double-precision floating-point calculations, the new GeForce GTX TITAN Black still has a slightly higher core frequency and double the memory (6 GB to 3 GB). That is now something with certainty we can say that in this generation of graphics cards NVIDIA released the fastest single-processor model.

    Specifications and recommended price

Specifications and cost graphics card ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black listed in the table in comparison with the standard version NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti and AMD Radeon R9 290X.

    Package and Accessories

The box that comes card, made of cardboard, but has an outer shell color, executed in the standard style, ZOTAC. On the front side provides information about the amount of memory a list of key technologies supported by graphics, labels with information about the extended warranty and utility for overclocking and monitoring, as well as a sticker with a list of the included games.

On the reverse side of the package is a brief video specifications, the minimum system requirements and a small description of the technology NVIDIA.

Inside the cardboard shell is upholstered with padded central compartment, which is fixed and the video card. Underneath, separated cardboard partition are accessories.

Options ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black is quite decent. It includes an adapter DVI-to-D-Sub, two adapter cable for power supply, CD with drivers and utilities, and instruction booklets, and a bonus set of three-game series Splinter Cell.

Video produced in China, and her three-year warranty is provided. Suggested retail price GeForce GTX TITAN Black is 999 U.S. dollars, as Black-version, in fact, replaces the usual “Titan”, the price of the balancing process which has already dropped to $ 900, and even a little lower.

Currently, however, ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black and similar graphics cards of the same model, unfortunately, you can not buy less than 1100 U.S. dollars.

    Design and Features of PCB

TITAN Black distinguish from ordinary TITAN glance easy. This is the same “brick” sizes 267h100h39 mm, but through the glass enclosure cooling system radiator visible black, whereas conventional TITAN 780 or Ti-plated it.

This clearly and name card. Top of the enclosure and a similar inscription GEFORCE GTX, equipped with lighting.

Include video output – standard DVI-I and DVI-D (both – Dual-Link), HDMI version 1.4a and DisplayPort 1.2, neighboring lattice discharge heated air outside the system case.

Despite the fact that the GeForce GTX TITAN Black installed full graphics processor, so even with the grown slightly frequencies, limiting the power consumption for the adapter is declared at around 250 watts – as a normal GTX TITAN or GTX 780 Ti. For this card is equipped with one six-and Eight-one connector for additional power.

Power recommended power supply for a system with a single graphics card – not less than 600 watts. Pair of connectors for SLI will create astounding performance and unprecedented majeure cost system of four TITAN Black. Of course, $4000 can be spent on something more useful, but if you drive on the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and even as a passenger, then why not?

As you can see in front of us – quite the reference version GeForce GTX TITAN Black. About ZOTAC says here except that the sticker on the bottom of the cooling system.

The circuit board is almost an exact copy thereof on the GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

8-phase supply system GPU power transistors DrMOS not changed.

Power management is performed by the GPU production controller NCP4206 ON Semiconductor.

Graphics processor chip which has an area of 561 mm2, released in Taiwan for 51 weeks in 2013 (the second half of December) and applies to version B1. If GeForce GTX TITAN marking processors was GK110-400-A1, and GeForce GTX 780 Ti – GK110-425-B1, the most advanced at the moment is marked by NVIDIA GK110-430-B1.

His base frequency in 3D-mode is 889 MHz, which is only 23 MHz higher frequency GPU GeForce GTX 780 Ti. In forced mode frequency should be increased to 980 MHz, though, according to the monitoring, in our case, it rose much more strongly – to 1,071 MHz at peak load. In the transition to 2D-mode processor frequency is reduced to 324 MHz while reducing stress. ASIC quality of our GPU instance equals 79%.

We regularly present the information in the articles, but still once again draw your attention to that at the moment no direct correlation between ASIC Quality and video card overclocking potential we could not be detected, as well as depending on the ASIC temperature of GPU.

On the ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black installed six gigabytes of memory standard GDDR5, scored 12 chips manufactured by SK Hynix (marking H5GQ2H24AFR-R2C).

Theoretical effective frequency of these chips is 7000 MHz at which the video card memory and functioning. As you can see, on the TITAN Black were no factory overclocking memory. Its capacity with a 384-bit bus width is 336 GB / s, which is 16.5% higher than a conventional TITAN, and exactly the same as at the GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

With specifications ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black also available from the screenshot utility GPU-Z.

Cooling system – efficiency and noise level

Changes in the cooling system was not the video card (not counting, of course, the color of the radiator). It is a fusion of the evaporation chamber at the bottom, aluminum radiator, metal substrate with thermal spacers on the memory and power components, as well as radial fan with adaptive speed control.

The advantage of this cooler is the removal of all heated air outside the computer chassis. We add that, according to the monitoring, fan speed can be adjusted in the range from 1200 to 4300 rev / min.

To check the temperature of the video card ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black as load we used five test cycles very resource-intensive game Aliens vs. Predator (2010) at the highest quality graphics in the resolution 2560×1440 pixels with 16x anisotropic filtering and antialiasing MSAA-4x.

To monitor the temperature and all other variables used MSI Afterburner software version 3.0.0 beta 19 and GPU-Z utility version 0.7.8. All tests were performed in a closed case, the configuration of which you can see in the next section, with an average room temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius.

When automatic fan speed control cooler GPU ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black warmed up to 87 degrees Celsius, and the speed of the fans themselves already in the first cycle of the test reached 3200 rev / min.

If we look at our previous reviews of the reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN and GeForce GTX 780 Ti, then we can say that the temperature regime of the video card is changed.

When the maximum fan speed, which amounted to 4250 rev / min, peak GPU temperature was found to be 76 degrees Celsius.

Almost the same results were on reference GeForce GTX TITAN and GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Consequently, the level of noise the ZOTAC same: it is moderately noisy in automatic mode and the fan is very noisy at maximum speed. In the 2D-mode video card can not be heard.

    Overclocking potential

In tests GeForce GTX 780 Ti, we already know that the transition to the new core Kepler stepping B1 increased its overclocking potential compared stepping A1, so we were hoping to see the same thing with the GeForce GTX TITAN Black. And, as it turned out, for good reason.

Without loss of stability and the emergence of image defects core frequency ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black we managed to raise to 175 MHz, or 19.7%. A very good result, it seems to us.

In turn, we have increased the memory frequency at 1120 megahertz effective, ie by 16%. Final frequencies video made 1064-1155/8120 MHz.

Note that ordinary GeForce GTX TITAN with crystal stepping A1 such frequencies on standard air cooling and never dreamed of. Moreover, at high load in 3D-mode frequency of the GPU overclocked could increase to 1233 MHz, which is well seen on the monitoring data when checking temperature mode overclocked.

83% of the capacity of the fan

However, to achieve such frequencies we had to manually set the fan speed to 3540 rev / min, or 83% of capacity. If will TITAN Black with alternative cooling systems, then we can have confidence in the higher frequencies.

Test configuration, tools and methods of test

Video card performance test was carried out on a system with the following configuration:

Comparison of the original video card ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black we spend with standard versions of NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN and GeForce GTX 780 Ti at the nominal frequencies.

In addition, the testing included the fastest single-GPU graphics card on the chip AMD – MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning on the 1080/5000 MHz frequencies, as well as the reference AMD Radeon R9 290X with a 1000/5000 MHz frequencies.

We add that the Power Limit value on all video cards were exposed to the maximum.

To reduce the dependence of the performance of video cards on the speed of the platform 32nm six-core processor with a multiplier 48, a reference frequency of 100 MHz and is activated, Load-Line Calibration was overclocked to 4.8 GHz when the voltage in the motherboard’s BIOS to 1.38 V.

Hyper-Threading is enabled. In this case, 32 GB of RAM operated at a frequency of 2.133 GHz with 9-11-11-20_CR1 timings at a voltage of 1.6125 V.

Testing commenced April 30, 2014, was conducted under the operating system Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with all critical updates on a specified date and the installation of the following drivers:

    • motherboard chipset Intel Chipset Drivers – WHQL from 21.09.2013 ;
    • library DirectX End-User Runtimes, release date – November 30, 2010 ;
    • video card drivers for graphics processors AMD – AMD Catalyst 14.3 Beta v1.0 from 17.03.2014;
    • video card drivers for graphics processors NVIDIA – GeForce 335.23 WHQL from 03.10.2014.

Graphics card performance has been verified in two resolutions: 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 pixels.

For the tests, we used two image quality modes: Quality + AF16x – texture quality drivers default to include 16x anisotropic filtering and Quality + AF16x + MSAA 4x (8x), including 16x anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing power 4x or 8x, in cases when the average number of frames per second remained high enough for comfortable game.

In some games, because of the specific game engines have been used other smoothing algorithms, which will be further described in the procedure and in the charts. The inclusion of anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing is done directly in the settings of the games.

If these settings in the games out, the parameters changed in the control panel of the Catalyst drivers or GeForce. There was also forced off vertical sync. Besides this, no additional changes to the driver settings have been made.

Video cards have been tested in two graphics tests and fourteen games have been updated to the latest version at the date of commencement of training material:

    • 3DMark (2013) (DirectX 9/11) – version, testing stages Cloud Gate, Fire Strike, and Fire Strike Extreme;
    • Unigine Valley Bench (DirectX 11) – version 1.0, with maximum quality settings, AF16x and (or) MSAA 4x, 1920×1080 resolution;

If the games realized the possibility of fixing a minimum number of frames per second, it is also reflected in the charts. Each test was run twice for the final results, take the best of both these values, but only if the difference between them does not exceed 1%. If deviations runs tests than 1%, the test was repeated more at least once to get a reliable result.

    Performance test results and analysis

In the diagrams the results of ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black in nominal operation reflected a dark turquoise color, and when overclocked – a lighter shade of turquoise. Reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN and GeForce GTX 780 Ti show typical products of the company light green, and the MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning and AMD Radeon R9 290X – traditional red scheme.

    • 3DMark (2013)

In 3DMark (2013), the overall difference between all the video cards tested today is not too large, even in the most resource-intensive operation. Despite this, ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black slightly ahead of normal GTX TITAN and GTX 780 Ti, with the latest video card difference is only 1.6-2.6%. Well done looks like in this test MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning, came close to the leader in the first two stages of 3DMark and even slightly ahead of it in the most resource-intensive mode Fire Strike.

    • Unigine Valley Bench

Way more noticeable margin in the test Unigine Valley.

But here, ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black quite naturally became the leader, even ahead of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti on the matter of points. Overclock ZOTAC allowed to raise its performance in Unigine Valley by 10-15%. Also note that the graphics card of AMD graphics in this test have not been able to get ahead of any of the video cards based on GPU NVIDIA.

    • Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Fall of the Samurai

If the advantage of ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black over conventional NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN in Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Fall of the Samurai was considerable, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is approaching close to it. In addition, we note a very confident performance MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning modes without anti-aliasing. When the MSAA8x AMD, unfortunately, nothing to oppose NVIDIA in this game.

    • Sniper Elite V2 Benchmark

Even more convincing was the victory of NVIDIA Corporation in the game Sniper Elite V2.

But our goal – still does not compare Radeon R9 290X and GeForce GTX 780 Ti, and find out how fast the new ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black. And if on a background of GeForce GTX TITAN heroine of today’s article looks quite good, up from 9 to 11%, in comparison with the cheaper GeForce GTX 780 Ti, it does nothing for gamers, because the difference does not exceed 1-3%.

    • Sleeping Dogs

Otherwise, there is a situation in the game Sleeping Dogs.

Superiority ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black over ordinary GeForce GTX TITAN are less noticeable, especially in conditions without the use of anti-aliasing, as well as an advantage over the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. By the way, the activation of the most resource-intensive anti-aliasing in Sleeping Dogs allowed graphics cards based on AMD processors reach the level of the leaders (in particular this applies to MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning).

    • Hitman: Absolution

AMD is able to fight the age-old rival in the game Hitman: Absolution.

However, from the previous total advantage of AMD in this game with the release of the new NVIDIA drivers have no trace, so cool here increased performance GeForce GTX. However, the reference Radeon R9 290X comes at ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black without overclocking and MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning ready to argue with her and when overclocked. As for the difference with the GeForce GTX TITAN, it is 4 to 7% in the resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and 11 to 13% in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. With the GeForce GTX 780 Ti performance difference is minimal.

    • Crysis 3

Close to the performance of all cards tested today and in Crysis 3.

    • Tomb Raider (2013)

In the game, Tomb Raider (2013) can be observed over a noticeable difference, but the overall picture does not change.

    • BioShock Infinite

Graphics card with NVIDIA GPUs to test the game BioShock Infinite continue to experience problems with the minimum number of frames per second, although the game itself this was not observed by us. At the average FPS they lead, and the advantage of ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black over conventional GeForce GTX TITAN is 9-10%.

    • Metro: Last Light

In the test, Metro: Last Light with Advanced PhysX technology problems with minimum FPS begin already from AMD.

And if you disable additional physical effects the situation does not change much.

In fairness it should be noted that at this critical NVIDIA solutions for comfortable gameplay indicator is also not too high. With regard to the superiority of ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black on NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN, here it ranges from 6 to 14%. In turn, GeForce GTX 780 Ti is almost nothing had inferior novelty.

    • GRID 2

A similar alignment of forces we can observe and Racing GRID 2.

    • Company of Heroes 2

On the new NVIDIA drivers increased performance GeForce GTX and the game Company of Heroes 2.

Nevertheless, AMD cards here are still the leader, and MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning able to compete even with the overclocked TITAN Black.

    • Total War: Rome II

Revenge NVIDIA did not have long to wait – in Total War: Rome II advantage again gone over to the Trinity GeForce GTX.

However, in this game you can mark a much more interesting thing than another confrontation AMD and NVIDIA. Note that in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, when, according to the monitoring, Total War: Rome II requires about 2.5 GB of memory, GeForce GTX 780 Ti does not look so confident on the background of two GeForce GTX TITAN and loses even the weakest of them . Of course, we remember that the GeForce GTX 780 Ti is endowed with three gigabytes of memory, which, in principle, should be enough for the most demanding modes Total War: Rome II, but the result, as they say, is obvious.

    • Batman: Arkham Origins

Test Batman: Arkham Origins showed us the usual balance of power between the trio and the GeForce GTX performance with varying success Radeon R9 290X, depending on the quality mode.

Note that in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels using MSAA8x two Radeon R9 290X is second only to the overclocked versions of TITAN Black. Recall that we tested at Batman Hardware Accelerated PhysX mode Normal, not High.

    • Battlefield 4

Usual for today’s test pattern can be observed in the game Battlefield 4.

Of the features of the test results can be noted the impressive performance gains when overclocked ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black, which is 15%.

    • Thief

API Mantle little bit helps graphics cards based on AMD processors in the game Thief, but the maximum that is possible to achieve – is to get ahead of ordinary GeForce GTX TITAN.

ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black faster GTX TITAN no less than 10%, and 1,5-2,9% faster than GeForce GTX 780 Ti. The overclocking allows you to raise its performance by another 12-14%.
Complemented by a chart table with the results of tests with the estimation of the final average and minimum FPS for each video card.

Next, go to the summary charts.

    Summary diagrams

First of all, we estimate the benefit of ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black before the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN at their nominal frequencies, where the results of the last video taken as the initial point of reference. Recall that the “Black Titan” the GPU frequency up to 6.2%, a memory – by 16.6%, and 7.1% more stream processors and texture units. And in what advantage TITAN Black all of this resulting.

As you can see, the increase is noticeable in all games, including the lightest graphics modes. The average of all tests ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black ahead NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN 8.2% in the resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and 9.3% in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. Maximum benefit was recorded by us in the game Metro: Last Light when using Advanced PhysX.

But in the game compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti new ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black has the advantage of a few megahertz for the GPU and an additional three gigabytes of memory, which are as yet little where needed. As a result, the performance of these cards in the standard of their performance is almost the same, and we will demonstrate the following two summary charts.

Is that in the Total War: Rome II in the resolution 2560×1440 pixels, you can see a 11-13% advantage “black TITAN”, but in the most resource-intensive test mode Hitman: Absolution to get additional 6.3%.

Excellent overclocking potential card ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black, when her frequency without having to upgrade the cooling system and increase the stress we have been able to raise from 889-980 / 7000 MHz and 1064-1155 / 8120 MHz, has enhanced graphics performance in all the tests. Particularly noticeable in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels.

Average for all gaming benchmarks the performance of top card after overclocking rose 9,7-12,4% in the resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and 11,3-11,9% in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels.

The following pair of pivot charts we just urge our readers not to be regarded as a direct juxtaposition of specific cards. Pitting together two reference ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black and AMD Radeon R9 290X, we aimed to evaluate today’s high technological and engineering capabilities NVIDIA and AMD, and not at all to figure out which specific video card faster.

It is clear that for the cost of TITAN Black can buy two standard R9 290X, and then their speed – in games where the CrossFireX works effectively – is undoubtedly higher. And when compared to single-processor flagship we got following picture.

Do without comments. By the way, except for certain modes of Total War: Rome II and Hitman: Absolution, these summary diagrams are quite fair and to oppose the reference GeForce GTX 780 Ti with Radeon R9 290X, prices are much closer than the TITAN Black and R9 290X.

    Power consumption

Measurement of energy systems with different graphics cards by using multifunctional panel Zalman ZM-MFC3 , which shows the consumption of the system “from the wall” as a whole (excluding monitor). The measurement was carried out in 2D-mode during normal operation in a Microsoft Word or “internet surfing”, as well as in 3D-mode.

In the latter case, the load was created with the help of four successive cycles of opening scene Swamp level from Crysis 3 in the resolution of 2560×1440 pixels at maximum graphics quality settings, but without the use of smoothing MSAA.

System with ZOTAC GeForce GTX TITAN Black peak load consumes 20 watts more than with the conventional configuration GeForce GTX TITAN, and 9 watts less than GeForce GTX 780 Ti. That is, the difference is minimal, especially for that price range, which includes cards tested today.

Note that both the Radeon R9 290X showed approximately the same level of energy and that any of the current configuration will be enough power supply capacity of 600 watts.

After receiving the full kernel with all active SMX-blocks at higher frequencies and faster memory, the new added up to 10% efficiency and could even slightly ahead of GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

Nevertheless, as the only gaming graphics card GeForce GTX TITAN Black does not make sense even though the transition to a new core stepping and its excellent overclocking potential. With 30 per cent difference in cost GeForce GTX 780 Ti, the abundance of the original versions of these cards with elevated up to 1000 MHz frequencies and high performance coolers, the choice of gamers will be more than obvious.

Therefore, in our opinion, the target niche GeForce GTX TITAN Black will continue to be GP GPU- and CUDA-calculation for those who can not afford professional model Tesla K40 / K20X. Just now this TITAN is now even faster.
