Overview Monitor NEC MultiSync EA244UHD: a fine line between the clerk’s office and professional

    820

    Full coverage of Adobe RGB, resolution of 4K, the abyss of settings, a set of unusual modes (including for x-rays) and almost a perfect match with the specs – all this about NEC MultiSync EA244UHD. So why is the manufacturer assigns it to the usual office monitors?

    Yes, it sounds strange, but at a cost of about $ 1500 NEC MultiSync EA244UHD not apply to displays for pro, though for its price, you can buy a monitor from these professional lines NEC MultiSync PA, NEC MultiSync P or NEC SpectraView.

    Manufacturer has ranked our guinea to “office” series MultiSync EA, which follows from the model name: EA244UHD. But with all this hero of our film is endowed with many unusual features that can only be found in professional monitors, and even then not at all.

    Professional Display is usually different from the usual by several parameters. This is an advanced package, extended color gamut (100% Adobe RGB, which is not needed most of the users), excellent image quality and good uniformity of illumination, OSD menu with a lot of settings, support for multi-monitor configurations, good job functions PBP (output to screen ” Pictures “from multiple sources at the same time), as well as the presence of specific (eg, medical) profiles on the menu and, of course, the availability of programs for calibration from the manufacturer, and sometimes even the ability to edit LUT monitor user.

    Example of operation PBP on NEC MultiSync EA244UHD

    The reviewed by us NEC MultiSync EA244UHD meets many of these points, a couple of exceptions. In addition, this monitor is supported by the NEC SpectraView II, designed to calibrate the screen. Previously, this application allows you to calibrate the mainly professional monitors from NEC MultiSync P Series or PA.

    Alas, the hero of this article is not supported by another tool from NEC – MultiProfiler. It is designed to fine-tune the GPU SpectraView Engine, which is located within the same monitor NEC MultiSync PA, also with the help of this application you can work with internal LUT of these monitors. Our test subject does not have access to the built-LUT.

    As to what category could be considered NEC MultiSync EA244UHD, if the office of the monitor – even 4K – he indecently expensive, and the manufacturer, for whatever reason, did not write it to the professionals?

    It is likely that the NEC is simply not in a hurry to promote the resolution of 4K professional segment, or perhaps manufacturers of panels with such a resolution is not reached the quality that would satisfy engineers NEC.

    Nevertheless, the questions still remain more questions than answers, so the topic of accessories NEC MultiSync EA244UHD to one class or another we will return in the conclusions, after a full acquaintance with the display and image quality tests.

    Package

    Comes monitor normal cardboard box is quite large – but the display does not have to collect. In addition, packed NEC MultiSync EA244UHD not foam, and inflated with air very durable plastic “cushion” – exactly the same way pack cartridges for laser printers.

    The box was found the following cables:

    • DisplayPort to DisplayPort;
    • USB 3.0 Type A – Type B (for connection of the monitor to the PC);
    • Cable NEC ControlSync (need to create a multi-monitor);
    • Power cord.

    All cables except one – NEC ControlSync – we have met before. As for the unseen before cable, it is designed to synchronize the displays in the construction of multi-monitor systems. Here are just a video instead he passes the monitor settings – for example, the brightness of the light and the sensor, which is also in the NEC MultiSync EA244UHD.

    Wiring cables NEC ControlSync

    It is also noteworthy that the package does not include visor, which can be found in boxes with some professional monitors, NEC and other vendors.

    Diagonal of matte screen NEC MultiSync EA244UHD is 23.8 inches – a very normal and typical size. But its screen resolution, 3840×2160 pixels (the very 4K) for a diagonal to big. The result value is equal to 185.12 PPI per inch pixel.

    This means that the use of the monitor at a nominal resolution and scaling is almost impossible to be disabled – will be too small icons and text. Therefore, the user NEC EA244UHD there are only two ways: either to enable scaling and at the mercy of the OS, or a smaller set resolution, such as 2560×1440, and put up with the constant blur.

    The stated maximum brightness this cooler is 350 cd / m 2, which is very good, the maximum static contrast ratio at the NEC also expressed at a high level – 1000: 1. Dynamic contrast manufacturer does not have, but it’s for the best – all the same, this value does nothing.

    Like any modern monitor with the matrix AH-IPS, the viewing angles from NEC EA244UHD equal to 178 degrees horizontally and vertically. Brightness subpixels coded unknown number of bits, but because the monitor displays more than 1 billion colors, we can conclude that it uses a 10-bit matrix or 8-bit technology FRC.

    RTT our guinea precisely known: the manufacturer claims that it is 5 ms, but the principle on which it was measured (GtG or BtW) – he does not speak. Also worth noting is that the monitor uses LED backlight GB-LED, through which he received an extended color gamut: the maximum color gamut of Adobe RGB was 108.6%, and the coverage area of sRGB and does crept to the sacred figure of 146%.

    The exact model used matrix we never found out, but judging by the rare combination of specifications (type of matrix and its backlight, color gamut, screen size, its resolution) can be assumed that in the NEC EA244UHD used LG LM238WR1-SLA1. Specifications of the LCD-panel exactly match those in the monitor before us.

    As we said at the beginning, at the time of this writing, the price of the “office” NEC MultiSync EA244UHD is $ 1500. For the same amount you can take a real professional NEC monitor or rent a small office on the outskirts for a month or two. Here are just expensive professional resolution of NEC will be 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 pixels, while our experimental it is 3840×2160 pixels, which corresponds to the standard 4K.

    Appearance

    NEC MultiSync EA244UHD looks just like the other monitors the company. Its body is made of a shaggy black plastic, but, according to information from the official website, this monitor can be produced in white. Dark plastic well collects fingerprints, and to clean them will not be easy. Floor at the screen matte, while it slightly recessed into the body.

    At the bottom of the front panel there are two sensors: the brightness of ambient light and human presence. On the monitor, you can adjust the sensitivity of the two sensors and two ways to use energy-saving mode: turn off the screen or reduce its brightness.

    This mode will be activated when the thresholds of one of the sensors. According to our tests, both sensors do their job well, and deceive “human sensor” we have never happened, even though we tried hard.

    In the lower right-hand corner are touch keys – Another difference is the “office” of the NEC from a professional. On a more serious models of NEC can be found only good old mechanical keys, and models from other manufacturers may fall even more comfortable joysticks.

    The side panels NEC MultiSync EA244UHD there is nothing interesting. Is that on the right side of the screen is the USB 3.0 port and a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones.

    On the back side you will notice only holes for ventilation and a handle to carry the monitor. Ports and connectors are at the bottom of the monitor – they are positioned parallel to the plane of the screen. Leg at NEC MultiSync EA244UHD removable, it is located on the chute for compact cable management, and under it – on the back of the monitor – there are two “sets” mounting holes VESA 100×100 at different heights.

    With the communication capabilities in our guinea things more than good. To enter the video used a pair of ports DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI-D. Unfortunately, the DVI-D port is only compatible with standard DVI-D Single Link, although they look a hair’s breadth as connectors DVI Dual-Link.

    Therefore, the best option for connection of the monitor to the PC remains DisplayPort (moreover, it only supports a resolution 3840h2160 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz). A DVI connector may be used to implement the function of PBP or PIP (two images side by side or picture-in-picture). In this case, their capacity would be sufficient.

    On the rear panel there are three connectors USB 3.0 (one of which – type B – is intended for connection to a PC), 3.5 mm audio jack-to output the sound from your PC, and two slots NEC ControlSync to synchronize displays NEC in multi-monitor configurations .

    Now look at the monitor stand. Thanks to the four rubber feet located on a round base, the monitor is firmly on the table.

    As for the inclination of the screen, and here our guinea showed himself perfectly. Tilt the screen can be in the range of -5 degrees (over) to +25 degrees (away from you). Well, you can raise the screen to a height of 130 mm. The ability to rotate the display 90 degrees (mode Pivot) is also present.

    Menu and special features

    As we have mentioned above, the menu NEC MultiSync EA244UHD a lot of settings – it’s time to get to know them more.

    NEC EA244UHD menu looks the same as the interface of many other monitors NEC. In the very first paragraph collected as basic settings “pictures” like brightness, contrast, and brightness of black and sensor settings. Item with a choice of color profiles is in the same section. The monitor is pre-installed profiles for text, video, games and photos, also not without its “dynamic” profile.

    In the next menu screen contains settings that can be useful when you use resolutions lower than 4K. In particular, you can configure the exact position of the image on the screen and stretch or compress it. Also in this section you can enable or disable the compensation of uneven illumination matrix and job functions OverDrive.

    The third paragraph contains all the subtle image adjustments. Here you can select the color mode (which is not to be confused with the color profile from the first menu item), as well as fine-tune it.

    Presented modes FULL (matrix operates with maximum color gamut and brightness), sRGB, Adobe RGB, DICOM SIM (intended for demonstration of x-rays) and PROGRAMMABLE (uses the results of the hardware calibration using software SpectraView II).

    In particular, you can set an arbitrary white balance (from 3,000 K to 15,000 K), and change the position of the white point on the three primary colors, hue, saturation, and color shift (options White, HUE, Offset and Saturation, respectively)

    In the fourth paragraph collected the remaining monitor settings. Here are the audio settings (volume and source selection), the setting of PBP and PIP, adjust the brightness of the LED, and many other options.

    As we have said before, NEC EA244UHD can simultaneously display the image of the four video sources. Therefore, the possibility of adjusting this function are presented fairly rich.

    sm.PBP-1.600 sm.PBP-2.600

    In the fifth paragraph are the settings of the OSD.

    In the last two paragraphs you can learn about the work of power-saving mode and view information about the source signal.

    Test Procedure

    Monitor NEC MultiSync EA244UHD been tested by our new method. We decided to abandon the slow and sometimes inaccurate Spyder4 Elite in favor of faster and more accurate colorimeter X-Rite i1Display Pro.

    Now, for the measurement of the main parameters of the display will be used in conjunction with this colorimeter software system Argyll CMS latest version. All transactions will be carried out in Windows 8. During testing, the refresh rate is 60 Hz.

    In accordance with the new methodology, we measure the following parameters of the monitor:

    • White brightness at the illumination power from 0 to 100% in 10% increments;
    • Brightness black with backlight power from 0 to 100% in increments of 10%;
    • Contrast of the display when the backlight power from 0 to 100% in increments of 10%;
    • Color gamut;
    • Color temperature;
    • Gamma curves of the three primary colors RGB;
    • Gamma curve gray;
    • Delta E (standard CIEDE2000);
    • Uniformity of illumination at a brightness of 100%.

    For the calibration and analysis of Delta E used a GUI for Argyll CMS – DispcalGUI, the latest version as of this writing. All of the above measurements are performed before and after calibration. During the tests, we measure the main monitor profiles – exhibited by default, sRGB (if available) and Adobe RGB (if available).

    Calibration is carried out in the profile of the default, except in special cases, which will be discussed further. For monitors with wide gamut we choose hardware emulation mode sRGB, if available.

    In the latter case, the colors are converted to the internal LUT of the monitor (which may have a bit of up to 14 bits per channel) and displayed on a 10-bit matrix, while the attempt to narrow the gamut to the borders of sRGB color correction OS will reduce the accuracy of the color coding.

    Before the start of all tests monitor warms up for an hour, and all of its settings are reset to factory default settings.

    Also, we will continue our old practice of publishing profiles for calibration of monitors we tested at the end of the article. In this test lab Gadget Help warns that such a profile can not 100% correct deficiencies specifically for your monitor.

    The fact that all the monitors (even within the same model) will necessarily differ from each other with small color errors. Produce two identical matrix is physically impossible – they are too complicated. Therefore, for any serious monitor calibration colorimeter or spectrophotometer is required.

    But the “universal” profile created for a particular instance, as a whole can improve the situation and the other devices of the same model, especially in the case of cheap displays with pronounced defects in color.

    Visual assessment of image quality

    The reviews of laptops, we often faced with high PPI – for example, above 220 pixels per inch. In such cases, always had to include scaling – or see small icons and fonts on the screen was very difficult. The hero of the article, this ratio is much lower and amounts to 180 pixels per inch, however without scaling a monitor hard, therefore it is necessary to include this option.

    The screenshots can be seen that the icons OS elements, fonts and images on websites become more. It seems everything is in order and now the monitor can work, but in fact it is the feeling is deceptive.

    In order to interface the program aligned to new standards, the support of this scaling. If not, then the interface or stretched to fit the selected size and become “soap and pixelated,” or the program will always be displayed on a scale of 1: 1.

    Fortunately, with such games will be no problem. Even when on the scale interface OS play “image” will just be what it conceived to developers. With video playback also will not have any problems – from zooming interface operating systems and applications, it does not.

    When playing a test video is no problem with the picture we have not noticed. To color rendition claims were not, and shadow detail was clearly visible. As for the Glow-effect, then monitor it, of course, is there, but not very much emphasized. In addition, you can try to remove it by reducing the brightness of the black on the menu, but in this case inevitably suffer other colors due to decrease the contrast.

    Here, the attentive reader can come up with the idea to reduce the level of black using the same name in menu to compensate for Glow-effect. Unfortunately, nothing good will not result in such experiments.

    If you go into the menu and set the “black level” of less than 50%, the brightness of the black will remain unchanged, but the brightness of the white starts to fall, and with it, and the static contrast ratio, which decreased to 272: 1.

    If we put the black brightness above 50%, then – here’s a surprise! – It starts to grow, and the brightness of the white will remain unchanged. After that, the static contrast is also reduced, but dramatically, to 6.1: 1.

    Neither crystalline effect, no effect, Cross-Hatching (diagonal stripes on light colors) on the screen, we have not noticed. As regards the function Overdrive, then inverted traces from smoothly moving objects also have been reported.

    PWM control backlight brightness in the monitor is available, but the flicker frequency is 23 kHz. The human eye can not see such a frequency, and therefore we can say that Shima is still no.

    Finally it is worth to say that in the NEC MultiSync EA244UHD have built-in speakers, but their quality – like a cheap laptop. Bass and treble speakers lacking, and while setting the maximum volume they start nasty rattle. Avoid such problems, you can, if you listen to music through headphones connected to the monitor.

    Testing before calibration

    Since the monitor has several profiles and modes of operation, the very first test we carried out in the Standard profile with Full color mode with the maximum possible color gamut. Calibration was carried out with the same settings.

    The maximum brightness of the white area was 353 cd / m 2, which corresponds to the claimed brightness, and the brightness of black at the maximum illumination power – 0.36 cd / m 2. As a result, the maximum static contrast ratio was 970: 1, which is very good in general, and it is quite normal for the AH-IPS-matrix in particular.

    Color gamut, as expected, turned out to be advanced. He was 145.5% of the sRGB color space, and 107.8% for Adobe RGB. White point in this is not ideal.

    Color temperature was kept for level 7 300-6 700 K in dark shades and sank somewhere to 6 600 K in the transition to light. This is very good, though not a perfect result.

    But gamma curves disappointed us: for the three primary colors, they were higher than the standard on the entire range of measurements. With the curve of gray things better, it deviates from the standard not so much.

    With a measure of color in NEC MultiSync EA244UHD not so good for its price: the average deviation was 2.87 units, and the maximum – 7.14. Such indicators are normal for IPS-monitor for $ 170 – $ 350, but not good enough for the display, which costs almost $ 1500.

    However, a final conclusion not rush, because we have not yet learned the results of calibration and have not checked the sRGB and Adobe RGB.

    sm.Uniformity.800

    As we have mentioned above, the monitor has the option of aligning the uniformity of illumination of the screen, we have included this option and made measurements at 15 points on the screen. The results were a pleasant surprise: the greatest deviations from the brightness of the central portion were found only in the upper part of the screen, and they do not exceed 5%. Decent result.

    Testing after calibration

    After calibrating the brightness of whites fell slightly – up to 326 cd / m 2. But the brightness of the black field, on the contrary, grew slightly – to 0.38 cd / m 2. As a result, the static contrast ratio slipped to a level of 853: 1. For a calibrated monitor quite well.

    Color gamut has not changed, but the white point is moved closer to its rightful place.

    Experiment with calibration obviously did not go to the benefit of color temperature – it dropped to 6 200-6 300 K, which gave all the colors noticeable warm hue.

    But the gamma curves of the primary colors visibly moved in to the reference curve, while the red curve is almost merged with it.

    With a measure of color Delta E, as you might expect, things went much better. Now it has dropped to an average value of 0.36 units, and the maximum – to 2.05.

    Testing in a special mode sRGB and Adobe RGB

    White brightness in these two modes hardly varies. Although differences in the brightness of black there, but they can be called minimal, because the result was similar static contrast ratios for both profiles.

    As might be expected, when the profile of sRGB color gamut of the monitor is reduced to 98.3% of sRGB and 72.8% for Adobe RGB, respectively.

    As for the profile with an expanded color gamut, when it is turned on as the color gamut is not the maximum, but significantly wider: 129.5% of the space of sRGB and 95.6% of the Adobe RGB respectively.

    But the white point in both cases stand apart from the reference point of D65, which is slightly spoils the overall impression.

    Color temperature using both profiles was almost the same. From the reference level of 6500 K, it was deflected at 100-200 K, which is not very much.

    From the curves of three primary colors when using these two profiles fared better than the standard. When the sRGB profile curves of the primary colors, except blue curve, borne by reference.

    When the Adobe RGB profile is saved the situation described above, except that the blue curve begins to deviate from the standard.

    When the sRGB mode average Delta E value was 1.32, and the maximum – 3.31. When activated, the profile of Adobe RGB average Delta E value decreased to 1.14, and the maximum – up to 3.1. Again, very good results, although in standard mode with calibration to all beautiful.

    Conclusions

    After becoming acquainted with the NEC MultiSync EA244UHD can say that the monitor was a success, but the high price of $ 1500, and the positioning of the hero of this article as “office display” spoil the impression.

    Probably, the hero of this article is not enrolled in the pros because of – not yet used 4K resolution and non-ideal (but still very good) picture quality. Also worth considering is not the best job Windows scaling: some elements of the OS does not support scaling, and third-party software developers are in no hurry to solve this problem.

    But the hero of this article there are many features that are unlikely to appear even in professional monitors from other manufacturers. We’re talking about a rich on-screen menu, lots of fine tuning of the image, support utilities NEC SpectraView II, which previously meant only for calibration of professional monitors.

    [easyazon_block add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B00L7TWW72″ cloaking=”no” layout=”top” localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” tag=”gadgethelp-20″]Also do not forget to support the regime of DICOM, with which you can be considered as the X-ray images on the screen – in hospitals, it can be useful. A gourmet developers NEC raised switching frequency up to 23 kHz – the human eye will not notice the flicker at such a high frequency, respectively, it can be argued that the system is devoid of illumination of the monitor flicker.

    In short, if you are planning to buy NEC MultiSync EA244UHD to work, you should take care to monitor calibration – then its image quality can be raised to a great level. Well, if you mess around with the calibration do not want to, you can use the built-in modes sRGB and Adobe RGB – they work imperfectly, but very good.

    Those who gather in the comments to write about an inadequate price, we hasten to remind you that cheap monitors with full coverage of Adobe RGB have never been.
