    Frio Silent 12

Let’s start with a younger model – Frio Silent 12 sealed into a compact cardboard box with a picture of the cooler on the front side and a description of the key features and specifications on the back and side edges of the box.

Along with the cooler are available in almost the same set of fixtures, as well as at the flagship Frio Extreme Silent 14 Dual, except for the wire clips to attach the fan and the pressure plate. Note that each component of the attachment is in a separate bag signed.

Produced entire line Frio Silent in China, and they should be given a three-year warranty. As for the cost, it is so far from official sources is not known, although since the announcement of the entire trio has been more than two months. Frio Silent 12 can be bought for 30-35 dollars.

The design of the cooling tower system is very simple: in three nickel-plated copper heat pipes that are part of the base, are pressed aluminum plates, and one of the sides of the radiator mounted 120mm fan.

Our regular readers in the outlines Frio Silent 12 have certainly learned model Thermaltake NiC L32, only smaller in size. So there is – dimensions Frio Silent 12 are only 141x128x66 mm and weighs 532 grams, of which 392 occur in the radiator.

The total number of aluminum plates of 0.4 mm thickness is equal to 48, they are placed on the heat pipes with intercostal distance of 2.0 mm. From the sides of the plate are partially closed curved ends down edges, their profile has a trapezoidal bends in the middle part, and punched recess.

We note that at the bottom of the cooler plate pack is shorter. Made it appear to improve the compatibility of the cooler to the radiators on the memory modules. However, it is not clear how to be a fan, because his frame still overlaps the zone edges.

Eight millimeter heat pipes are arranged linearly in the body radiator, and the gap between them is less than two millimeters. At the same time, the base made by the technology of direct contact tubes are trёhmillimetrovy gap filled aluminum insert.

After you install and remove the cooler, we got almost uniform prints.

However, such a large distance between the heat pipes in the bottom of Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 obviously will not contribute to the efficient and uniform heat transfer from the processor cover.

In Frio Silent 12 is set one fan size 120x120x25 mm with a black frame and white odinnadtsatilopastnoy impeller.

It is equipped with a PWM control, fan speed varies in the range from 500 to 1400 rev / min, or from 300 to 700 r / min using the supplied Low Noise adapter. According to Thermaltake, in the first case, the noise level should not exceed 19.3 dBA, while the second – 12 dBA. Thus, the cooler can really prove to be one of the quietest on the market. Maximum air flow is stated at the level of 55,88 CFM.

Judging by the marking on a foil sticker of the stator, the original manufacturer of the fan is a company Power Logic (model PLA12025S12M).

Starting with the fan voltage stated in the specifications 6 W was found to be 4.4 W, and the maximum power does not exceed 1 W, although in the specifications indicated 2.88 watts. That is, the fan must not only be very soft, but also economical. Claimed bearing life of 50 000 hours, or more than 5.7 years of continuous operation.

Fixing the fan on the radiator is carried out using a pair of wire clips.

As the radiator is symmetric, then theoretically it can be installed immediately a couple of 120mm fans, but the second will strengthen artisanal.

Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 is compatible with all platforms, without exception, and the installation procedure it does not differ fundamentally from the Frio Extreme Silent 14 Dual, only the pressure plate is a little different.

The cooler is narrow, so to prevent the RAM module is unlikely to be able to, even despite the fact that when you install it on the fan away from its lower edge to the motherboard is only 19 mm.

The distance from the fins of the radiator is 40 mm.

Inside the computer chassis Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 looks very modest, especially after a test of his eldest brother.

Add that the alleged limit heat output of the processor, which Frio Silent 12 must handle is 150 W, and proceed to the second party of today’s test.

    Frio Silent 14

As you can see on the first photo of this article, Thermaltake Frio Silent 14 comes in a cardboard box, decorated in the same way as that of the Thermaltake Frio Silent 12. Only a few more of its dimensions.

The same design and the same exact set of components.

No different country of production and guarantee, but the retail price of online stores are slightly higher than the Frio Silent 12 and is $ 45.

If Frio Silent 12 we called a miniature copy of Thermaltake NiC L32, then Frio Silent 14 altogether is an exact copy, with the only difference being that this model is equipped with another fan. But see for yourself:

Elementary tower design, where three heat pipes with a diameter of 8 mm threaded 50 aluminum plates of 0.4 mm thickness with intercostal distance of 2.0 mm. Cooler dimensions are 160x150x67 mm and weighs only 640 grams, of which 475 occur in the radiator.

The plates are stamped on the same principle as in the Thermaltake NiC L32 – with the company logo in the center.

Three nickel plated copper heat pipes are on trёhmillimetrovom distance from each other, with both the body of the radiator, and at the bottom with a direct contact.

The surface of the cooler is flat, so we managed to get a good mark on the entire area of the heat spreader constructive processor LGA2011.

On the Thermaltake Frio Silent 14 is exactly the same fan, as well as on Thermaltake NiC L32, but instead of the red and white colors here he is black and white.

It can operate over a range of speeds from 500 to 1200 rev / min, or from 300 to 700 rev / min using an adapter. The noise level is the same as that of a 120-mm fan Frio Silent 12. Max air flow is stated at the level of 71,24 CFM, static pressure – 1.13 mm H2O.

The original manufacturer of “turntables” are all the same – Power Logic, but claimed maximum power consumption is higher and amounts to 5.76 watts. However, the company reinsured, because in fact this fan consumes less than 1.56 watts of power.

The starting voltage is 4.3 V, and the guaranteed service life of a plain bearing is the same 50 000 hours of continuous operation.

By the principle of fixing the fan on the heatsink, this cooler is identical Frio Silent 12 – used staples.

Installation does not differ one iota, as well as the distance to the motherboard (19 mm to 40 mm fan and up to the edges).

As for the thermal power limit, then Frio Silent 14 is slightly higher at 165 watts.

For comparison, we add that the flagship Thermaltake Frio Extreme Silent 14 Dual value is 240 watts.

Test configuration, tools and methods of test

Comparison of the effectiveness of cooling systems was carried out in the case the following configuration:

    • Control and monitoring panel: Zalman ZM-MFC3 ;
    • Power supply: Corsair AX1200i (1200 W), 120-mm fan.

To carry out basic tests on the six-core processor support 100 MHz at a fixed value of 44 in the multiplier and the function is activated, Load-Line Calibration was overclocked to 4.4 GHz with an increase in tension in the motherboard’s BIOS to 1,240-1,245 In.

Turbo Boost technology during testing was turned off, but the Hyper-Threading to improve heat dissipation has been activated. Voltage memory modules was fixed at 1.6125 V, and its frequency was 2.133 GHz with timings 9-11-11-20_CR1. Other options BIOS, related to overclocking the processor or RAM, is not changed.

Testing conducted in the operating system Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. The software used for the test:

    • LinX AVX Edition v0.6.4 – to create the CPU load (the amount of allocated memory – 4500 MB, Problem Size – 24234, two cycles of 11 minutes);
    • Real Temp GT v3.70 – for monitoring the temperature of processor cores;
    • Intel Extreme Tuning Utility v4.2.0.8 – for monitoring and surveillance of all system parameters during acceleration.

CPU load created by two consecutive cycles of LinX AVX with the above settings. To stabilize the temperature of the processor cycles allotted between 8-10 minutes. For the final result, which you can see in the diagram, adopted the maximum temperature of the hottest of the six CPU cores in the peak load and idle.

Furthermore, in a separate table are given temperature of the processor cores, and their average values. The room temperature is controlled next to the system with an electronic thermometer with measurement accuracy 0,1 ° C and the ability to monitor changes in the hourly room temperature for 6 hours. During this test the ambient temperature ranged 21,9-22,4 ° C.

The noise level of the cooling was carried out by an electronic sound level meter CENTER-321 in the period of one to three hours a night in a completely closed room about 20 m 2 fiberglass. The noise level is measured by the system case, when the source of noise in the room was just the cooler and fan.

The sound level meter, fixed on a tripod, always placed strictly in one point at a distance of exactly 150 mm from the stator of the fan. Cooling systems were placed at the corner of the table on the polyurethane substrate.

The lower limit of measuring the sound level meter is 29.8 dBA, and subjectively comfortable (not to be confused with a low!) Noise coolers measurements at this distance is about the level of 36 dBA. Noise, we have adopted as if in a quiet, located near the border of 33 dBA. The fan speed was varied over the entire range of their work with a special controller by changing the supply voltage in steps of 0.5 V.

As opponents of the two new products today will act already familiar to you cooler: Thermaltake Frio Silent against the ring 12 will Scythe Kotetsu , and Frio Silent 14 will face Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140 in its standard trim with a single fan. In addition, we have included a chart and table of results Thermaltake Frio Extreme Silent 14 Dual, to evaluate the difference between the trio of coolers series Silent.

In addition to its regular fans, Frio Silent 12 and Frio Silent 14 were further tested with the fans Corsair AF120 and Corsair AF140, mounted on the radiator on a “blowing-blowing.” However, since the brackets supplied with the cooler is not enough, they had to be fastened with plastic cable ties.

We add that the speed control of the fan cooling systems was carried out using a special controller with an accuracy of ± 10 rev / min in the range of 800 rev / min to a maximum of steps 150 or 200 rev / min.

    Test results and analysis

    Cooling efficiency

From beginning of the operating modes with regular fans. Objectively speaking, in terms of performance Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 and Frio Silent 14 we are not impressed. However, the low-end model is more or less worthy unable to resist the Scythe Kotetsu, but ceded much older Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140.

And in the individual operating modes backlog reaches seven or eight degrees Celsius in the peak load that the coolers the same price range is equivalent to a complete fiasco. Also note that in the lineup and senior Thermaltake Frio Extreme Silent 14 Dual yielded hit Thermalright, despite the impressive size, weight, and two fans.

Nevertheless, it Frio Extreme Silent Dual 14 is the most efficient cooler of this line in the box.

But if the trio set alternate fans Corsair AF appropriate size, then the situation changes. The most impressive model Thermaltake Frio Silent 14, who managed to get around 1 degree Celsius extreme version of the two-tower at the maximum and minimum speed fans of the same, while the average conceded the same degree Celsius.

In turn, Frio Silent 12 is also a good idea when you install adds to it a pair of Corsair AF120 – in comparison with the standard mode of operation with a single fan gain is about four degrees Celsius in the peak load. In general, a pity that Thermaltake is not equipped with these models with additional attachments for the second fan. He is quite appropriate here.

Pretty mediocre positions on efficiency, but we can note that they managed to achieve at a relatively low level of noise.

Unfortunately, the higher frequency during acceleration under our test processor coolers Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 and Frio Silent 14 could not be reached, therefore, that these results and recorded in a summary table of our rating limit overclocking the processor and on the chart.

Again, we see a rather mediocre performance indicators and the ranking, but the noise level is a new pair of Thermaltake coolers are the lowest.

    Noise level

From the measurements, contrary to our expectations, Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 and Frio Silent 14 does not have the best noise level among the participants of today’s test.

The older model is a chassis and completely disappointed ringing radiator fins in the range of from about 960 to 1070 rev / min, as can be seen from the characteristic “shelf” on the graph, and the total defeat impeccable Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140.

Younger model, though this was denied defect, but lost Scythe Kotetsu until the fan speed 1100 rev / min. Nevertheless, it is Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 we can name the most quiet cooler of the pair. It is comfortable up to 1090 rev / min, and the virtually silent will remain until a speed of 700 rev / min.

New CPU cooler Thermaltake Frio Silent 12 and Frio Silent 14 “did not grab the stars from the sky”, but, in our opinion, still need to find their place in the abundance of air cooling systems, which can now be seen in the shops.

Despite the relatively modest size and light weight, they are able to ensure the stability of the six-core frequency 4400 MHz for Linpack and do it without fanfare, including in low-speed fan operation.

Add here the same versatility, ease of installation, three-year warranty and a low price, and eventually do get pretty decent respect to the set of characteristics of the cooling system with a focus on peace.

Of the disadvantages of new products, we note low build quality older model and the lack of an extra pair of wire clips supplied to install a second fan.
