    Testing: Performance

    Compare our hero film, HP Pavilion 15-n029sr, we will be with the other 15-inch laptop, Sony VAIO Fit 15 inside which has a processor Intel i7-3537U and discrete video NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M. RAM in a Sony laptop a little less – only 4 GB.

    CPU tests

    Judging by the very first – the processor – tests, the hero of our film was much slower than his opponent. Although the benchmark PCMark 8, which uses all the resources of the system, and not only one processor, the gap between the two laptops was not very strong.

    However, nothing surprising in this: we have become accustomed to the fact that processor chips hurried behind AMD Chipset Intel, even if the latter is not based on the latest architecture.

    Testing the video subsystem

    In HP Pavilion 15-n029sr have two video card: integrated processor Radeon HD 8610 and the discrete Radeon HD 8670M. Adapters are able to work in pairs, ie mode CrossFireX. In this version of AMD called “hybrid graphics”.

    Your opponent, Sony VAIO Fit 15 also has two video card – built-in graphics core processor from Intel and discrete graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M. Paired they can not, so testing will involve only a discrete graphics card.

    In the first, synthetic benchmark 3DMark hybrid graphics superiority manifested only in the lightest subtests – Ice Storm. But in the subtests and CloudGate FireStrike, in which the load is much higher, leading Sony laptop with video card NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M.

    As for the real games, the level of FPS in them strongly depends on the video drivers and optimize the latter. According to our tests, the hybrid graphics succeeded only in Sniper Elite V2 – here “Spark” from the AMD Radeon HD 8610 and Radeon HD 8670M was able to slightly outperform NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M at low temperature and at maximum detail.

    In other games, except Crysis 3 – which is not running on a laptop Sony, – the victory went to the discrete graphics card NVIDIA (note parenthetically that NVIDIA has introduced an updated series of GeForce 800M, while AMD still offers only for laptops Radeon 8000M, released in January of last year).

    Separately assessed performance in the popular online game World of Tanks. With minimal graphics as “frame rate” was quite acceptable – the average number of frames per second was 40.9. When installing the highest quality level of detail FPS dropped to 17.9 unsatisfactory mark.

    Testing: display

    Varieties of displays that can be installed in HP Pavilion 15, apparently set. Firstly, the resolution can be as HD, and Full HD, and secondly, even HD-identical matrix laptop modifications may vary in quality. However, we are not the first time confronted with such a situation.

    In this case, we have tested a version with TN-matrix with a resolution of HD, frankly feeble in all characteristics. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find out what the manufacturer should give thanks for this “masterpiece” – an accurate model of the matrix could not figure out.

    Vertical viewing angles are frankly small, so when you work with a laptop constantly have to adjust the angle of its screen. Horizontal viewing angles are a little better, but not too wide. Supply of brightness extremely modest – if this level of luminosity of the white box can be called a “reserve”: only 161.1 cd/m2.

    For indoor use this somehow enough, but on the street display inevitably fades, which further contributes to the glossy surface.

    Luminosity of the black field at maximum brightness is 1.71 cd/m2. It is easy to calculate the contrast is very low: 94:1. A couple of years ago, such displays were the norm among laptops, but since then things have changed: now it is one of the worst of the matrices that can be found in mobile computers.

    With such brightness and contrast it would be foolish to expect good results in tests of other parameters. So gamut just 57% of the sRGB color space is not a surprise for us. In practice, this means that the colors almost twice more faded than they should be. Note that this is very sad, even by the standards of cheap TN-matrices.

    With a color temperature also not going smoothly. Even the white color has considerably overestimated temperature. And with decreasing lightness grayscale temperature increases rapidly, reaching 10,000 K transcendent values ​​is a light gray color. In other words, the picture on the screen HP Pavilion 15 looks very “cold” and quite pleasing to the eye.

    Not everything is in order and gamma curves. They need correction, and very serious. But the worst thing is that for the sake of “straightening” scales have to sacrifice brightness: in our case, after calibration it dropped to 128 cd/m2 which absolutely sad.

    Color accuracy is low: the most shades Delta E is much higher than the limit value – 3 units – to which the human eye is unable to completely understand the difference. The average value of the deviation is 4.27. -Not the worst result of all that we saw, but close to it.

    In general, the matrix should be recognized as the main disadvantage of the test laptop. Of course, it may happen that the same characteristics in other configurations, HP Pavilion 15-n029sr matrix can be used by different manufacturers, but we would not expect that these displays are very different from each other.

    Testing: Sound System

    In a notebook, a pair of small loudspeakers, and they are placed quite successfully – above the keyboard. Of course, when installing the speakers on the bottom can sometimes be achieved some extra depth and surround sound, but the sound is muffled and thus much easier. And in the case of the test laptop randomly shut dynamics during operation is virtually impossible.

    As to quality, the sound is “flat”, the frequency range is not impressive, and the stock volume is not too large. However, there are strengths – body does not resonate, the keyboard even when using the maximum level will not rattle in the string and percussion instruments, and significant flaws like cod, hiss and other artifacts while listening was observed.

    Laptop audio path based on an integrated 4-channel decision Realtek ALC282. This chip is rarely found in laptops, but he still managed to show very good results during testing. Of course, if you want to get the highest quality sound in a hospital should use AV-receiver connected to a laptop using a HDMI-cable. But if this is not possible, then we must be content with a standard audio output.

    Last influenced fashion is increasingly combined with a microphone input, which is not the best way affects the reliability of the connector and the signal transmission quality. Over the last year testing the sound quality of the analog audio output of mobile PCs have repeatedly suffered fiasco or else it was possible only at a certain position of the plug because of substandard combined audio.

    Unfortunately, this notebook was one of those. Turning off all the special effects and EQ settings to get a good picture noise and distortion, we have not been able to. Just in case I was also turned off the external power supply and wireless module, because they often affect the sound quality miscalculations in power circuits.

    However, it did not help: the output was again obtained flawlessly flat frequency response across the audible range, but extremely high levels of noise and distortion.

    Testing: noise and heat body

    At low load on the processor and the graphics subsystem noise generated by the turbine cooling system is almost imperceptible. Our meter with a lower limit of 30 dBA, placed at a distance of 30 cm from the front edge of the notebook is simply not able to fix it.

    In short, when working with office documents, listening to music and watching videos is not too severe does not annoy the cooler noise – only the hard drive from time to time reminds himself barely noticeable chirping.

    With short-term (up to 20-30 seconds) average maximum loads and even the noise level remains the same, but with prolonged load the fan speed gradually increases and the noise level reaches 35.8 dBA. It is almost invisible in the office building, but clearly audible in a quiet room.

    At the maximum load on the processor for a minute the noise level reaches its maximum at 39.8 dBA, which is noticeable even in a noisy office. Because design features side vents noise from air flow is not uniform, but with “howls.” Upon termination of the load noise level falls gradually, but quickly.

    Measure the level of heat produced at room temperature (21 degrees Celsius) for the nine-point bottom and work area. After an hour of cyclic package runs 3DMark (subtest Fire Strike Extreme) workspace temperature depending on the measuring point was 27-34 degrees Celsius, and the bottom – 24-40 degrees. Results are average, but at some point the laptop heats up still slightly above the threshold of comfort.

    Power supply and battery life

    When operating in the minimum consumption of 15 HP Pavilion was able to get ahead, despite the fact that its CPU TDP of 8 watts more than the Intel Core i7-3537U: 25 to 17 watts. However, when viewing Full HD-video Sony laptop was more-lasting – only at the maximum level of illumination was achieved parity. This is understandable: the HP lights very dim, it consumes on high not so much.


    HP Pavilion 15-n029sr – a typical home laptop with basic gaming capabilities. Of course, it has hybrid graphics: graphics core processor can be paired with a discrete video card. However, the increase will not FPS in all games, and it will depend on the settings in detail, and optimize the video drivers.
