New fuel cells can use aviation fuel

    Of course, they are gradually conquering the market, but in the mass consumer portable electronics continues to rely on lithium-ion, lithium polymer or nickel-metal hydride batteries, and sometimes even on ordinary alkaline disposable batteries.

    But scientists from the University of Utah, USA, have found an alternative to hydrogen. As they have developed a fuel cell is used as fuel conventional aviation fuel JP-8. Well, still not quite normal – it is used mainly in air forces of NATO throughout the world.

    The creators of the new fuel cell achieved their stable operation without high temperatures and exorbitant demands on the purity of the fuel mixture, which looks promising. Prototypes work at room temperature and do not confuse sulfur impurities in the fuel, and this has been achieved through the use of enzyme catalysts instead of traditional metal.

    Prospects have a lot of elements: for example, they can be installed in electric vehicles, with the process of filling these machines will be practically the same as in our usual car with a gasoline engine.

    It will be sufficient to use the fuel pump from the JP-8 or a similar composition of fuel. Not the fact, of course, that it is in this area the new elements will become popular, because conventional ICE easier and does not require additional energy conversion consumes a hydrocarbon fuel directly.

    But in various kinds of autonomous electronics, especially the military and industrial – protected from laptops and tablets to exoskeletons – such sources of supply will fall quite out of place. Of course, we do not see today and tomorrow: the project requires fine-tuning, but the display on the results already look promising.
